Question:

What fields should my logbook have?

In preparation for next year, when the deemed kilometre system will be scrapped, I’d like to start keeping a logbook. What are requirements for my logbook? Are there any mandatory fields?

Answer:

You don’t need to spend a fortune buying a fancy logbook. The information you need is essentially a breakdown of your business mileage on a day-by-day basis through the year. You start with the mileage shown on your odometer at the beginning of the year.

SARS has produced a logbook on their website (www.sars.gov.za), which you can download, keep on your computer and update on a regular basis through the year. Always keep a back-up in case your computer or the information is lost or stolen! Alternatively, you can collect a free logbook from your local SARS office (while stocks last) or draw up your own logbook on an excel spreadsheet or in a small book that you can keep in the cubby-hole of your car.
