Marius Maritz - Editor in Chief

Marius Maritz completed his MA (Finance) at the University of Alabama, USA, in record time. He was also accepted by the Harvard University (USA) Executive Corporate Financial Management Programme, and successfully completed this course. More recently, as a newly accepted member of the South African Institute of Tax Practitioners (SAIT) he has received the accolade of Master Tax Practitioner.

Maritz is well-qualified to tackle taxation. He has served as an Associate Professor in the fields of Specialisation in Strategic Financial Management, Financial Management and Taxation at the UNISA Graduate School of Business Leadership.  Here, he was also involved in the development of executive and masters level programmes.

Maritz has served on the Board of Directors of a number of companies, thanks to his specialisation in the area of Financial Management. He has also consulted to a number of corporations, so he has extensive hands-on experience.

Today, he is the chairman of Certified Master Auditors (CMA) Incorporated, www.cmaauditors.co.za.

Ettiene Retief

With more than 14 years’ experience, Ettiene is a practicing financial accountant and tax practitioner, specialising in taxation and the interpretation and application of tax laws. Ettiene is a partner of, and the financial director for Financial Tax & Remuneration Services, also known as FTR Services.

Ettiene is the co-author of the Practical Tax Loose Leaf, and is a regular speaker at tax update and training seminars. He also regularly contributes to various publications.

Ettiene is chairman of the Tax Technical Committee of the South African Institute of Professional Accountants, as well as being actively involved in the SARS Joint Stakeholder Committee, and specific sub-task-force teams.

Andre van Staden

Andre van Staden is a tax specialist with nine years’ of experience in advising both individuals and companies on a wide variety of taxation matters. Andre is the proprietor of Exord Tax and Payroll Solutions, which provides a comprehensive tax advisory and compliance service. In particular, Andre advises companies on correct remuneration structuring and complete payroll solutions, helping leading companies achieve sound corporate governance and legislative compliance.

Andre holds a masters degree in tax law and possesses a unique blend of theoretical legal knowledge and practical application. He makes regular contributions to leading national daily newspapers on taxation matters and authors tax newsletters, which are used by leading companies to keep them, their contractors and employees informed of the latest developments in fiscal legislation and its interpretation and application.

Peter O’Halloran

Peter O’Halloran is an independent advocate. He has a Master’s degree in tax and is busy with a Doctoral thesis in taxation. Peter started his career at the master of the High Court in Pietermaritzburg and has over 17 years experience in tax, estates and estate planning. Peter has been in pritate practice since 2003 and is often briefed to appear for clients in taxation and other related matters. Peter specializes in tax research, structuring and litigation.

Anthony van Zantwijk

Anthony is a specialist in intellectual property commercialisation. He holds a BSc (Civil) Eng, an LLB (cum laude), an LLM (tax) (all from Wits); is a qualified patent attorney; and a fellow of the Institute of Intellectual Property Law. Anthony spent four years at Spoor & Fisher, specialising in the commercialisation and valuation of intellectual property before leaving the firm as a senior associate to join the Special Projects department at SARS (Large Business Centre, Johannesburg) tackling intellectual property valuations, tax issues relating to intellectual property and structured finance transactions.

During January 2007, Anthony teamed up with McLean Sibanda to establish Sibanda & Zantwijk. Apart from consulting to Treasury on s11D (R&D tax incentive), s23I (licensing anti-avoidance) and s31 (transfer pricing) of our Income Tax Act, Anthony also consults to SARS and SARB on IP matters in general and provides commercial services to many of South Africa’s multinational companies.
